Operators of Banker to Banker have warned the government and National Lottery Authority (NLA) to stop the move to clamp down their activities or face their wrath when they proceed.
Their warning came after several attempts by the Association to meet the Director General of NLA Mr Kofi Osei Ameyaw to discuss the way forward of operations of Banker to Banker and how government can tax them adequately.
Meanwhile, the National Lottery Authority (NLA) has indicated that it will soon clamp down the activities of illegal lotto operators, popularly called Banker to Banker, to help generate revenue for national development
The twice former NPP legislature for Asuogyaman Constituency in the Eastern Region who is also a Legal practitioner, Kofi Osei Ameyaw in an interviewed with Media disclosed that there are laws that banned Banker to Banker. Hence their operations are illegal, and my office will not condone such activities to go on while looking for money to develop this country.
He said the NLA would establish and deploy a Lotto taskforce to arrest the wayside operators who syphoned monies meant for the state into their private pockets at the expense of the state.
Those who would flout the laws of this country would prosecute in Lotto Courts to established nationwide.
Mr Osei Ameyaw said the introduction of Point of Sale (PoS) device to stake the lotto has been helpful and this time round the same device can be used to send and receive mobile money any day, anytime anywhere without hassle.
But the question remains, how can this PoS device efficiently work at places where there is no electricity to power the machines instead of allowing those already operating in these remote areas to work while government can also tax them.
But the Association of Banker to Banker operators vehemently disagrees with the position of NLA saying successive governments have tried same in the past to clamp down their activities yet they failed because the approach is wrong in the first place.
Banker to Banker operators can decide to operate from their private homes and government will lose huge tax at the end. Meanwhile, NLA can devise a mechanism to impose a tax on them either annually, quarterly, monthly or daily by legalising their operations rather than threatening to clamp down their activities which will not see the light of the day.
Metro News checks reveal that many people are not happy realising that NLA is threatening to arrest and prosecute Banker to Banker lotto stakers because their only survival after the Ministry of Lands and Forestry clamp down the activities of illegal mining (Galamsey) couples of months ago.
Their only survival is through lotto business. Therefore, Banker to Banker operators will resist any attempt by the government to embark on that exercise whereas there are fewer jobs available Meanwhile they have family responsibilities.
We’re saying government because President Nana Akuffo Addo appointed the Director General of NLA and anything he does wrong will be an indictment of this government and has repercussions on election 2020
