A Deputy National Communications Officer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Kwaku Boahen has asserted that, the cancellation of trainee allowance under former President John Dramani Mahama caused their defeat.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo yesterday (Tuesday) launched the restoration of the scrapped allowance. The restoration of the allowance was a campaign promise by then candidate Nana Addo. Former President John Dramani Mahama in 2016, vowed not to restore the allowances and went ahead to say that, if that will cost him the presidential race, he was ready for it.
The NPP promised to restore in full the allowance and they have fulfilled the promised. A trainee nurse is expected to receive an amount of GHc400 every month.
Commenting on the restoration on Rainbow Radio, Mr. Boahen said, the decision was for a good course although it caused them in the electioneering year.
He said nurses and teachers are the majority of employees on government’s payroll hence government prioritizes the training of nurses to meet the international standard ratio. He said, the allowance cancellation was unfortunate but explained the rationale behind it.
He said, the cancellation increased intake into our training schools since under their tenure, they realized that the allowance prevented other qualified persons from having access to nursing training.
“the allowances were withdrawn a few years back after government complained they limited intake by nursing training institutions…. It was unfair for nursing and teacher trainees to receive allowances when other tertiary students didn’t enjoy same…. It was a prudent decision which resulted in an exponential growth in enrollment figures at nursing and teacher training schools across the country, thereby expanding access nursing and teacher training” he said.
“It was Nana Addo’s campaign promise and he has delivered on it. However, we do not want a situation where trainees will complain about posting after completion. They should not finish school and come and sit home and not be posted… I cannot rule it out that the cancellation caused our defeat but everything is possible. The campaign promise by the NPP to restore the allowance was a major promise that caught the attention of the trainee nurses,’’ he added
