New Shanghai Shenhua boss Wu Jingui has slammed Carlos Tevez for being overweight and insists he won’t select the £650,000-a-week striker due to his fitness problems.
Tevez became the world’s highest-paid player when he joined Shenhua from Argentine side Boca Juniors in December but has struggled for form in China, scoring just twice in 11 appearances.
And Wu now claims Tevez, who recently returned to action following a calf injury, is not physically ready to play for the Chinese Super League side.
I won’t pick him right now. He’s not ready physically. He’s not fit to play,’ Wu, who replaced Gus Poyet at the helm earlier this week, told reporters via Goal.
‘He is overweight, along with [Fredy] Guarin. I have to take responsibility for the team and the players as well.
‘If you are unable do your utmost to play, there’s no point in picking you. I have coached lots of big stars, and my players are never picked on reputation’.
Tevez was subjected to jeers from Shenhua supporters in his first match back from injury — a 2-1 home loss at the hands of Henan Jianye on Saturday.
