The District Manager of Forestry Commission at Atwima Nwabiagya, Nana Kwabena Opoku Bosompim, has lauded the call by Catholic Bishops Conference urging the government to intensify the fight against illegal mining.
Nana Bosompim who was awarded the 2016 National Best District Forestry Commission Manager said, aside from the negative impact on our lands and water bodies, illegal mining also has serious economic challenges.
He argued that the illegal miners who have invaded the forest reserves without a license and failed to pay taxes to the government to build this country.
Kwabena Opoku Bosompim however described the incident at Nsuta in the Prestea Huni Valley District of the Western Region as “horrific and sad” though they illegally entered the pit knowing very well their operations have been banned notwithstanding government has deployed a team of security personnel together with NADMO officials to rescue the victims at the expense of the state Meanwhile that same amount can be channelled to something more profitable.
He appealed to Politicians, Clergy, Media, Security Personnel and all stakeholders to rally behind government to fight the galamsey menace which has exposed our youth to all sort of stubbornness
