The president of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation Mr Faouzi Lekjaa has announced that Morocco will be ready to host the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations if original hosts Cameroon fail to meet the new hosting requirements set out by the Confederation of African Football.
“The panel will decide about the specifications, and the organisation of the 2019 CAN in general and the findings of this committee will concern the 2019 tournament. Cameroon was to host it under the old format. If Cameroon can meet the new requirements, then we will know in the coming days. In case they cannot, new applications to host the tournament will be announced and Morocco will be in the race, ” declared Lekjaa in an interview with the Moroccan newspaper L’Economiste.
“Morocco will not hesitate at all for a second chance to host the AFCON if CAF calls upon us. Moreover, in 2015, because of the Ebola epidemic, we could not host it. In 2019, we will replace Cameroon to host the CAN. It is the revenge of history “. The CAF executive committee member added.
There have been growing doubts as to whether Cameroon -who controversially, won the hosting rights for the 2019 tournament under former CAF boss Issah Hayatou – will go on to stage the competition since Ahmad Ahmad became the new CAF president in March this year.
